We Are Live!

We at Latitude Geospatial are pleased to announce this new business venture. We have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring you a series of services all focusing on spatial data analysis, management, exploitation, and dissemination. Although this is mainly focused towards the construction and mining industries, we do also have a wealth of knowledge and experience in other areas too such as, aviation, maritime, Defence, and environmental applications.

So why have we done this?

After being involved with several projects throughout their life cycles and working with people from various backgrounds, on top of seeing a lot of organisations and individuals posting products on LinkedIn (this was a big driver for the business), it became apparent that there was a skill-gap. A skill that we, ourselves, have. Due to our professional experiences of being both a GIS analyst and a land surveyor, we had the core knowledge of understanding how data and products should be handled and displayed.

To give a bit more context to this, if we were solely GIS analysts there would be a good chance that we would not know how spatial data are collected (via traditional surveying methods), what format they are likely to be in, restrictions with CAD, etc. Conversely, if we were solely land surveyors there would be a good chance that understanding how to perform a series of analyses on data, how to manage spatial data in an efficient manner, and cartographic principles would all be missed. There is a common prejudice towards surveyors that they should be able to provide the full works, from data collection, to processing, to analysis, to product generation and dissemination – this clearly isn’t the case with GIS analysts, however. After many years’ experiences alongside some of the best surveyors Europe has to offer, how to analyse and deliver products are topics that are continuously brought up that universities simply aren’t supplying.

Another observation from our careers is that managers at all levels throughout the construction and mining industries pay lip service to spatial data, often misunderstanding it, and not realising how important it is to the success of the project. Construction and mining are moving into a digital revolution with spatial data at the forefront of this; think drones, laser scanners, etc. They are all providing an invaluable service that are now becoming common practice across sites.

We bridge these gaps. Ultimately, we are helping you reduce time and effort, and to make more informed decisions based on spatial data you already have.

Now many people are used to working in construction and having technical drawings in front of them from surveyors/site engineers, however 9 times out of 10 these are confusing, have a hideous amount of white space, hard to decipher scales, and sometimes even without grid lines. We would argue that these products are not technical drawings, but in fact rudimentary maps.

Cartographic principles, such as visual contrast and legibility, are regularly wide of the mark. Knowledge of end users is at a minimum – many fresh engineers from university have touched on the subject of spatial data but very little understand how to use it and apply it to the planning cycle within a project.

So why trust us with your data?

We are a veteran-owned business. This brings a wealth of core skills and standards that other businesses often pretend to support. We also have first-hand experience and exposure throughout the construction and mining industries, and understand what managers require to make decisions based on the most up to date and accurate data.
